What is a Job Fair?

A Job Fair is an event where employers and job seekers come together for the purpose of applying and recruiting for jobs. Companies screen candidates for existing or future job openings.  Job Seekers get the benefit to apply with several companies and to gather company information. Employers appreciate well prepared candidates with a professional attitude.

Tips for Job Seekers:
  • Check the list of employers who will be participating in the Job Fair and research the companies
  • Be prepared to make relevant questions to employers
  • Create a one-minute elevator speech about yourself and practice it
  • Taylor your resume to the specific jobs you are applying for (click here to make an appointment with an employment counselor to get help with your resume)
  • Be prepared with your reference letters (for a Reference Letter template, click here)
  • Be prepared for Interview Questions (for the next Interview Questions workshop, click here)
  • Prepare questions to ask employers
  • Make a prioritized list of employers to meet in the Job Fair
  • Present yourself with a purpose – show confidence
  • Few job seekers get hired in a Job Fair, but you can make an important connection with the companies for the next time you want to apply.  You can learn more about the hiring procedures of the companies and get valuable advice from the recruiters.  Treat the Job Fair as an initial contact. 
  • Dress for success!  Attend the Job Fair as if you are going for an interview, and SMILE!
  • Greet each employer with a firm handshake, make eye contact and be polite
  • Listen carefully to what the employer says and ask questions
  • Request a business card of obtain a contact name to follow up with phone number and email
  • Thank employers for their time
  • If you are given and application form, take time to fill it out neatly and completely
  • Keep a list of the employers you meet.  Make notes about each company and your conversation with each representative
  • Personalize thank you letters to companies that interest you
  • Keep accurate records of your contacts and the communication you have with them
  • Learn about what employers are looking for in the people they hire.  The most important is to collect information and make contacts!
Tips for Employers:
  •  Make your booth interesting and attractive by displaying the name and logo of your company, using pictures to illustrate your company services or products
  • Supply your table with company forms and materials 
  1. Copies of your company application form
  2. Description of each position you want to fill
  3. Leaflets or brochures about your company
  4. Business cards to contact you
  5. Giveaways to promote your company
  • Ensure that representatives represents your company well to interact with job seekers (assertive, smiling, positive, stand up, greet job seekers with firm handshake, review applications, ask job seekers to elaborate in their experience and qualifications, schedule interviews with top applicants, they must know your company’s hiring procedures)
  • Attend to job seekers after the Fair (follow up with all persons who submitted applications or CV’s within 10 days, be straightforward with applicants)
